What Is A Cataract?

Cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eye that can lead to blurry vision and blindness. It is the most common cause of blindness in the world. Cataract surgery is a minimally invasive procedure which is highly effective and is the only way to remove cataract.

Most commonly cataract is caused by aging. As people get older, the lenses inside their eyes become less flexible and start to harden which leads to vision disruptions. Cataract can also be caused by other factors such as diabetes, smoking, certain medications, and trauma to the eye.

Treatment
The Surgical Process

The most common surgery for cataract is called phacoemulsification. The procedure begins with numbing the eyes with anesthesia. Then the surgeon makes a small incision in the cornea, and then inserts a tiny ultrasonic probe. This probe emits high-frequency sound waves that break up the cloudy lens into small pieces. The fragments are then suctioned out of the eye.

We may also use a laser to break up the lens. This is known as laser assisted cataract surgery. It is highly precise and causes less inflammation than traditional phacoemulsification. The high precision level of the laser can also correct mild astigmatism through peripheral corneal relaxing incisions.

After the cataract has been removed, an artificial lens also known as an intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted into the eye through the same incision the old lens were removed.

There are a variety of IOL options, and your surgeon will choose the one that is best for your lifestyle and needs. At Envision Eye Institute, we offer monofocal, multifocal, trifocal, and extended depth of focus lenses. For astigmatism, we will need to use a toric IOL which can either be monofocal or multifocal.

The entire process takes less than an hour. After the procedure, a protective patch is placed over the eye and you will be released to go home the same day.

For the next few days, it is completely normal to experience itching, mild discomfort, blurry vision, and sensitivity to light and touch. You will be prescribed eye drops to help the healing process and to reduce the risk of infection
