Styes & Chalazions

A stye (sometimes called a hordeolum) is a tiny, red, painful lump that forms at the base of your eyelash or under your eyelid. A bacterial infection is largely to blame for most styes.

There are two kinds of styes:

External hordeolum: A stye that originates at the base of your eyelash and progresses upward. The most common reason is an infection in the hair follicle. It may look like a pimple.

Internal hordeolum: A stye inside your eyelid. Commonly caused by an infection in an oil-producing gland in your eyelid.

When you have a stye, your eyelid is likely to be red, itchy, irritated and painful to the touch. We recommend a hot compress to alleviate discomfort.

A chalazion is a swollen lump on the eyelid. This happens when the oil gland of the eyelid gets clogged.  You may not be aware that you have a chalazion at first, and there is little or no discomfort. However, as it progresses, your eyelid may become red, swollen, and painful to the touch. If the chalazion gets too large, it can press on your eye and cause blurry vision.

Eyelid Papilloma

The eyelid papilloma is a frequent type of eyelid tumor/skin tag that affects middle-aged and elderly people. It is non-aggressive, painless, and has a low to no risk of developing into cancer. It resembles a skin tag and can be solitary or multiple, smooth or rough and is similar in color to adjacent skin. Commonly if the eyelid papillomas is small and not causing any symptoms, your doctor may just monitor it for any changes. Other treatment methods such as cryotherapy, laser or surgical intervention may be required if the papilloma gets too large to manage through observation.
